Jack. 2014.
DE. Jack ist zehn Jahre alt und noch nicht lange im Heim. Es ist Sommer. Die Vorfreude auf die Ferien ist gross. Doch am letzten Schultag wird er nicht abgeholt. Seine Mutter Sanna (26) ruft an und vertrostet ihn. Jack bleibt mit Danilo und den Erziehern allein zuruck. Es kommt zum Streit, bei dem er seinen Mitbewohner verletzt. Verangstigt lauft er nach Hause, um Schutz bei seiner Mutter zu suchen. Doch niemand macht ihm die Tur auf. Sanna ist nicht da. Nachdem Jack seinen sechsjahrigen Bruder Manuel von einer Freundin abgeholt hat, machen sie sich gemeinsam auf die Suche nach ihrer Mutter. Uber mehrere Tage ziehen sie durch die Stadt und folgen ihrer Spur. Dabei scheint es niemandem aufzufallen, dass sie ganz allein sind.?Eines Nachts brennt wieder Licht in ihrer Wohnung. Jack und Manuel rennen nach Hause, wo ihre Mutter sie in die Arme schliesst. Gemeinsam essen sie zu Abend. Jack versucht sich mitzuteilen, doch Sanna hort nicht zu. Ein Film uber die Reise eines Jungen, der fruh gelernt hat Verantwortung zu ubernehmen. Am Ende uberrascht er uns mit einer Entscheidung, die uns mit ihrem Mut den Spiegel vorhalt.

Dovidenia v pekle, priatelia / See You in Hell, Friends. 1970.
CZ. Film zasiahnutý "normalizáciou" mal pohnutý osud. Od verzie, dokončenej talianskym koproducentom sa autor v r. 1972 dištancoval, po rokoch sa v nových podmienkach k dávnemu projektu vrátil, výrazne ho prepracoval, dokrútil niekoľko sekvencií, zmenil dialógy. Bizarná feéria s prvkami čierneho humoru v charakteristickom prebujnelom štýle je rámcovaná symbolickou ideovou rovinou, značne poplatnou revolučnej súčasnosti.
Skupinka čudných ľudí sa oddáva hrám na akomsi vidieckom sídle. Živočíšne scény sú sprevádzané úvahami o smrti, "filozofickými" meditáciami, surrealistickými motívmi i narážkami na národnú tému. To všetko sa rozvíja v retrospektíve: svet je postihnutý katastrofou, z ktorej sa má ľudstvo zachrániť v arche. Hrdinovia sa odmietnu podriadiť krutému diktátu terorizujúcich "záchrancov", vyvolajú revolúciu a odchádzajú tam, odkiaľ nedávno prišli. Tajomná špirála večného ľudského boja sa dostáva do ďalšieho bodu... Bohatá obraznosť (Jakubisko tentoraz aj kameramanom) nenachádza odraz v proklamovanej závažnosti "výpovede", zamýšľaný presah sa utopil v inscenačných výstrednostiach. Zaujímavým prvkom je využitie zostarnutých hercov v dokrútkach.
EN. As a car full of an assortment of characters rolls down an embankment and bursts into flames, the old driver says "See You in Hell, Friends." The relations between the characters are shown in flashbacks. The pretty Rita and her fiancee Petras meet the old colonel, and come to live in his farmhouse. Rita marries the colonel as well as her fiancee, and has a daughter Christine. The colonel's supposed father shows up, and also makes amorous advances on Rita. They all live blissfully together until two holy women with axes arrive. The women start chopping down trees to build an ark. Rita starts having nightmares and Christine is crucified.

Der lange Ritt zur Schule. 1982.
Alex is a bright, but dreamy boy. At a school meeting he is reprimanded by the principal for coming too late to school on too many occasions. His achievements in sports are not mentioned and this annoys him. His sports teacher puts all his hopes on Alex as he is the school's biggest hope to winning the gold medal at the next inter-school tournament. The next morning Alex leaves for school, together with his friend Maren. Although he leaves the house on time he soon get's distracted as there is so much to see on the way to the school. There is, for example, the horse keeper. A nice old man who is driving with his old horse and the carriage. And he meets the pupils of the other school that participates in the tournament. In his fantasy, his bike becomes a horse and the bad guys want to steal the gold (medals). In his quest to thwart the robbing, his American-Indian blood brother Red Milan is there to assist.

HR. Napad na Hrvatsku, u jesen 1991, potpuno mijenja zivot sedmogodisnjeg djecaka Jerka. U njegov maleni, uredni, cisti svijet koji se prostirao izmedu roditeljske kuce i skromne, kamene kucice njegove bake, dosla je smrt. Jerko je vidio kako mu je baka ubijena, stric tesko ranjen, kuca srusena, roditelji odvedeni u zarobljenistvo, a sam se jedva spasava bijegom i zavrsava u prihvatilistu za ratnu sirocad. Pod stresom od ratnih dogadaja, Jerko neprestano suti i odbija svaku komunikaciju s okolinom. Na Bozic ujutro, sutljivi Jerko neocekivano progovara kad na malom ekranu, u televizijskoj reportazi o razmjeni zarobljenika, ugleda svoje roditelje.

Dubravka. 1967.
A coming of age drama.
Dubravka, a teenage girl who lives in a resort town by the Black Sea, approaches adolescence.
This is an excellent movie, and a very underrated too. First, it is the kind of serious approaching-adolescence stories that are funny, touching, sometimes troubling and, overall, the most memorable. Dubravka is a wild, boyish Crimean girl ( the movie is beautifully filmed and presumably set on the Crimean coast, Soviet-era southern paradise) who is struggling not to lose her childhood dreams and illusions while discovering the adult world that is so often mean, cruel and unfair. Yet some things, like friendship, endure beyond. The movie's strong is in staying a children's movie while frankly showing adult and family problems. Some scenes are very powerful. Recommended this movie to anyone, but notably to pre-teens, especially girls. But although it tackles issues that are still valid, it is old and romantic, and being set in the Soviet Union might not be understood by all.

Les Diables. 2002.
The siblings Joseph and Chloé are 12 and have just been placed on another children's home. For years they were on the same or separate homes or on the run together. Chloé is an autist. She does not talk, feels panic when touched, and eats only when told so. Joseph dearly loves her and firmly thinks she needs him. The child psychiatrist agrees that he has a very positive influence. Joseph dreams that Chloé will recover if they find their parents. The psychiatrist finds the mother. But she is also an autist. When the children were one year old she left them on the street just from an impulse. This is the first crack of Joseph's dream. The children escape from this home. When they are caught next time Chloé is send to a mental hospital. The same thing is about to happen to Joseph after a suicidal attempt in the police arrest. Because of his friendship with the gang leader lots of children liberate him on the way. With much violence they also liberate Chloé. Eventually Joseph will have robbed a man of a thick wallet, caused a large traffic accident when successfully stealing one car, stuck a knife in a police man, and be shot by him though not seriously. And Chloé will lose her fear of being touched.
