In an old house in Hanoi, Bi, a 6-year-old child lives with his parents, his aunt and their cook. His favorite playgrounds are an ice factory and the wild grass along the river. After being absent for years, his grandfather, seriously ill, reappears and settles at their house. While Bi gets closer to his grandfather, his father tries to avoid any contact with his family. Every night, he gets drunk and goes and see his masseuse, for whom he feels a quiet strong desire. Bi's mother turns a blind eye on it. The aunt, still single, meets a 16-year-old young boy in the bus. Her attraction to him moves her deeply.

Zärtliches Geheimnis / Ferien in Tirol. 1956.
10-year-old Rosmarin von Stetten lives with his widowed father Robert in the big city. He is the leader of a gang in school called "Hallodribums" (spell: hullowdreebooms). The boys decide to make a lot of mischief during their vacation. When Rosmarin comes home, he hears that he has to go to the castle of the "von Stettens" alone - and is disappointed. He explains that he wanted an adventurous vacation, but his dad tells him that he should go, but that his mischief should be so that it would be a good deed too, and so he agrees. Aunt Charlotte awaits him with her daughter Beate.
The following day in the morning Rosmarin goes to the lake near the castle and meets Thymian, the poorest boy of the village, whose mother did not come back from the war and who has to do several jobs in the village for his living. The boys enter a boat, but both fall into the lake. Thymian crawls out of the water first and is found by a servant from the castle, who thinks he is Rosmarin and brings him to the castle and to bed. The boy doesn't know what happens and thinks he's spellbound.
In the meantime Rosmarin is found by some village people and brought to Thymian's hut. Then he is ordered to help in the store. When he learns that Thymian is in the castle, he knows he has to do a good deed and to work for him, so that Thymian can enjoy the good life on the castle. But soon he recognizes that the work isn't as easy as he thought. In school he surprises the teacher with his knowledge of geography and French. But then a message arrives that his (Thymian's) mother will come home, finally, honored for her samaritan work in the war. He tries to change his role with Thymian, but the mother is back too soon - and he has a wonderful day with her. In this moment Robert von Stetten comes to the castle and sees the boy. But soon he hears that it is the son of Anna, the girl he wanted to marry years ago. But his relatives were opposing. At last at a village festivity the boys can change their personality, and because Robert and Anna see the similarity of their sons, they stay together - all four.

La Disubbidienza. 1981.
Luca Manzi is a fourteen year old boy while the Northern Italy Republic of Salo is governed by the Fascists. Luca becomes a partisan but after the end of the war he is disappointed because things don't seem to have changed as he had hoped and he decides to let himself die. But he is saved by Edith who tries to introduce him to sex. When suddenly Edith, who was also the lover of luca's father, dies of a heart attack, Luca is sick again. This time he is saved by Angela, his nurse, who sells herself to buy the remedy to cure him. Angela becames Luca's lover when his parents go to Rome and when they come back Luca decides to leave them despising their lives.

Gardens of the Night. 2008.
An 8-year-old girl is taken from her home and convinced that her family does not want her anymore. After enduring years of horror, she and her fellow victim are dumped by their capturers. Now, 17 years old and no one to turn to except each other, they do their best to survive life on the streets, until one day she finally accepts the help of a shelter counselor to find her way home. However, what she truly finds is the love of her life and that you can never go back. "Gardens of the Night", is a haunting, gritty and topical story which delves deep into the world of child abduction and where it often leads... for the "lucky ones." U leto 1968. godine maturant Petar (Slavko Štimac), stasava za ljubav, zaljubljujući se naizmenično i istovremeno u više žena, uglavnom onih zrelih i udatih: apotekarku, pekarku, bibliotekarku, u obe ćerke predsednika suda, svoju profesorku sociologije, zbog koje za maturski rad uzima temu iz marksizma. Potreba da konačno nađe „ženu svog života“ dovodi Petra u niz delikatnih i komičnih situacija i izbezumljuje njegovog oca (Danilo Stojković), opštinskog sudiju, uštogljenog čoveka, dogmatskih shavatanja, koji veruje da se omladina može vaspitavati samo „čvrstom rukom“ i koji pati zbog svog buržoaskog porekla (otac mu je pre rata bio geometar i školovao se u Pragu). Der Witwer Erwin Mai ist in seinem Betrieb ein angesehener Meister – tatkräftig, rührig und voller Ideen. Zu Hause jedoch lässt er gern Fünfe gerade sein. Mit ihren Streichen bringen sie die Lehrer in der Schule und ihre erwachsenen Mitbürger im Wohngebiet allmählich zur Verzweiflung. Tante Elsbeth macht sich verständlicherweise Sorgen. Sie beschließt energisch, Erwin schnellstens wieder zu verheiraten. Auf das Ergebnis ihrer Bemühungen darf man gespannt sein, da sich nicht nur Vater Erwin, sondern auch seine beiden Rangen tatkräftig zur Wehr setzen.

The Other Side of the Underneath. 1972.
The film is based on director Arden's "A New Communion for Freaks, Prophets and Witches", a play she staged with the Holocaust women's theatre troupe. It is comprised of a number of different episodes, each exploring a specific theme – female exploitation, voyeurism, sexual deprivation, etc. The Other Side is also a reflection of its creator's brush with madness.
The key concept behind The Other Side is intriguing. The film argues that madness is part of a cycle that leads to sanity. It also stresses that this complex process is often misunderstood by those who have never experienced madness. Cultural and societal taboos are cited amongst the main reasons for its existence.
The Other Side is also a radical feminist film, one that does not shy away from promoting chaos as a form of liberation. Purely political statements, however, are not part of the film's narrative.
Viewers unfamiliar with director Arden's legacy will undoubtedly be shocked with The Other Side. This is an extreme piece of cinema, which I suspect even the most liberal of viewers may find difficult to tolerate. There is a sense of anger in it that borders nihilism in its most pure form.
The Other Side is a film Dusan Makavejev would have loved to direct. It is controversial, provocative and very, very disturbing. Highly Recommended.

Phares d'ouest / Western Lights. 1990.
This documentary is about 12 French teenagers who sail a large sailing ship (with the help of two or three adults), following the same course Columbus followed from Spain to the Yucatan Peninsula, with stops at various Caribbean islands.
It's an excellent film with decent production values for the time. The boys clearly know how to sail and demonstrate a lot of courage and skill. There is one great scene in which a woman sings on the beach, and her dog tries to sing along with her.
This film would be excellent for families, teenagers interested in sailing, and others interested in Columbus, the Caribbean, the Canary Islands, Spain and Mexico. It is also a good film if you want to brush up on your colloquial French, although it has English subtitles for those who do not speak French.

EN. A famed Lithuanian painter expresses the torment of his youth through his paintings. But lately, even his work provides no solace, for he falls into a deep mid-life crises and can find no inspiration. The darkness began for him when his father was arrested for being an enemy of the state and sent to a Siberian prison. The boy and his remaining family become social pariahs, and the only way his mother can support them is to prostitute herself to the local police and politicians. Eventually the young painter is sent to the countryside, but even there, he cannot escape the fear and oppression. To cope, he becomes hard and cynical; his mother too changes dramatically and when the father finally returns home, he finds himself among virtual strangers.

In this Danish film, like the unrelated but very similar film Lord of the Flies, a largish group of unformed young people find themselves alone on an island with no civilizing adult presence to restrain them. In this film, the group includes adolescent and pre-adolescent boys and girls. As in the other film, the crudity of their unrestrained impulses results in murder, though for the most part they simply flirt with and bully one another.

EN. Abandoned (Hungarian: Torzók) is a 2001 Hungarian film directed by Arpád Sopsits. It was Hungary's submission to the 74th Academy Awards for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but was not accepted as a nominee.
Áron is a happy child in his family. But at some point things take a different turn, and his mother starts to lose her health rapidly. As this happens, the man in charge decides what's best for Áron without consulting the young boy's opinion, and the boy finds himself thrown out of his warm home into an orphanage in the woods. He's utterly displeased by what's happening, without knowing he has yet to face much worse. After a hard time getting over the harrassment of his classmates and being accepted as one of them, another obstacle on the way to his peace of mind faces him: His obnoxious teachers. He has no intention of being bad, but it's beyond his ability to blend into the revolting place he's in. The nasty treatment of the teaching crew gets the better of him, and he's not all that calm and passive anymore. But that leads into unpleasant events which Áron himself wouldn't want.
